Lie Algebras and their Gradings - Bradley Dart

In this talk I will define matrix groups and show the canonical examples, and consequently define the tangent space of a matrix group. A brief introduction to Lie algebras will then be given, with emphasis on the classical simple Lie algebras and tangent spaces as Lie algebras. Group gradings of (Lie) algebras will be discussed (with examples). The results of an NSERC USRA on gradings of classical simple Lie algebras of type B, C and D will be mentioned.
