Problems with Symbols
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On some browsers, some of the typesetting symbols used may not appear as desired. In particular, the square root sign may appear as Ö because the browser does not recognize the symbol. This is a rare occurance and it seems to only happen on Unix machines.
Even if the browser does recognize the square root symbol, it will appear without the horizontal line on top (that is, it appears more like a checkmark). Thus, if you see an expression like Ö7, it means the square root of 7. (This problem does not apply to the text inside the tutorial applets.)
Also note that quite often an expression is raised to the power of 1/2 (i.e. Öx = x½). This is equivalent to a square root symbol but the exponent is used more often for larger expressions because it is more convenient.
