Special Properties of Ellipses

An ellipse can basically be described as a squished or elongated circle.
Unlike the circle, an ellipse only has two axes of symmetry which are shown as follows.
Notice that both axes of symmetry pass through the centre of the ellipse.
When an axis of symmetry lies parallel to the x-axis, you call it the horizontal axis of symmetry.
When an axis of symmetry lies parallel to the y-axis, you call it the vertical axis of symmetry.
You will learn more about ellipses and their horizontal and vertical axes of symmetry in the Ellipse Module.
